Kid's Fun Cooking & Recipe Ideas
(with Mom's help)
Nacho Popcorn
Ingredients:
1 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/4 cup melted butter
10 cups freshly popped popcorn
1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese
Directions: In a small bowl stir paprika, chili powder and cumin into melted butter. Gently toss butter mixture with popcorn, coating evenly. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and toss until coated. Makes 10 cups.
Hot Dog Rollups
Ingredients:
1 package of hot dogs
1 can crescent rolls
Directions: Unroll crescent rolls one at a time. Roll the crescent roll around a hot dog and place on baking sheet. Bake according to directions on crescent roll container.
Snack Mix
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups broken pretzels
2 cups crispy rice or Rice Chex
1 1/2 cups M&Ms or Reeses Pieces
1/2 cup peanuts
1/2 cup butter
1/3 cup peanut butter
5 cups miniature marshmallows
Directions: In a large bowl combine pretzels, cereal and candy. In a large saucepan, over low heat melt the butter and peanut butter. Add marshmallows and cook, stirring until all is melted and smooth. Pour over snack mixture and stir to coat. Press into a buttered 9x13 pan and cool until firm. Cut into squares. Makes about 24 squares.
Bird's Nest
Ingredients:
2 cups chow mein noodles
1 package chocolate chips or brick chocolate
1 cup jelly beans
1 cup candy coated chocolate eggs
10 marshmallow chicks
2 T. peanut butter
Directions: Place squares of wax paper onto to individual plates. Put chow mien noodles in a large bowl. If using brick chocolate, break into pieces. Melt chocolate chips or pieces in the microwave, or over low heat on stove, just until melted. Pour melted chocolate over chow mien noodles, mix together to coat. Place mounds of chocolate/chow mien mixture onto several plates (on top of waxed paper). Have children form the mixtures into nests. Be sure the chocolate has cooled, but don't wait too long or it will harden! Using peanut butter as an adhesive, "glue" down the jelly beans and candy coated chocolate eggs inside the nest cavity. Glue marshmallow chick on the edge of or inside of the nest.
Bugs and Dirt
Ingredients:
1 package chocolate graham crackers
1/4 cup chocolate sprinkles (ants)
1 cup gummy worms
1 cup raisins (beetles)
Directions: Crush the graham crackers with a rolling pin. Place into a bowl then add the ants, beetles and worms to the "dirt." Let the kids use a clean sand shovel and scoop the bugs and dirt onto their plates.
Dump Cake
Ingredients:
1 can cherry pie filling
1 - 20 oz. can crushed pineapple with juice (do not drain)
1 yellow cake mix (dry, straight out of the bag)
1 - 8 oz. bag chopped walnuts or pecans (your preference)
1 - 7 oz. bag flaked or shredded coconut
1/4 cup butter, melted (1 stick)
Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Take out, but do not prepare, 13x9 inch baking pan. Dump cherry pie filling and undrained pineapple into pan. Spread around to combine fruit just a little. Sprinkle dry cake mix evenly over the fruit. Sprinkle nuts and coconut over cake mix. Drizzle butter evenly over nuts and coconut. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until coconut looks toasty. Let cool for 15 minutes or so.
Veggie Pizza
Ingredients:
1 ready made pizza crust
8 oz package cream cheese at room temperature
1 cup sour cream
1 pkg. Ranch dressing mix
2 cup raw vegetables, chopped fine (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes)
Directions: Bake the pizza crust, without toppings, at 350 degrees for 5 to 10 minutes, until lightly browned. Stir together the cream cheese, sour cream, and dressing mix and spread on the crust. Top with chopped vegetables.
Banana Dippers
Ingredients:
3 bananas - cut in chunks
1/4 cup cinnamon & sugar mixture
5 T. peanut butter
5 T. chopped nuts
5 T. coconut
5 T. sprinkles
5 T. crushed cookies
8 oz. package chocolate chips
Directions: Peel the bananas and slice into several pieces. Place the chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl and cook on high until melted - about 1 minute, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth. Dip the banana slices in the chocolate, then roll them in other ingredients as desired.
Apple Ladybugs
Ingredients:
2 red apples
1/4 cup raisins
1 T. peanut butter
8 thin pretzel sticks
Directions: Slice apples in half from top to bottom, and scoop out the cores. Place each apple half flat side down on a small plate. Dab peanut butter on to the back of the 'lady bug', then stick raisins onto the dabs for spots. Use this method to make eyes too. Stick one end of each pretzel stick into a raisin, then press the other end into the apples to make antennae.
Pretzel Sparklers
Ingredients:
long rod pretzels
white chocolate (melted)
sprinkles (all colors)
Directions: Melt the white chocolate. Dip the pretzel rod halfway into the melted chocolate then sprinkle the sprinkles over the wet chocolate. Lay on waxed paper to dry.
Fruit Smoothie
Ingredients:
1 cup nonfat vanilla or plain yogurt or lowfat milk
1/4 teaspoon vanilla (optional)
2 ice cubes
1 cup fruit (any, fresh or frozen)
Directions: Cut up fruits such as apples, strawberries, bananas, and pears. Put cut up fruit and add the rest of the ingredients into blender. Blend for about 30-40 seconds or until smooth and creamy.
Painted Toast
Ingredients:
1 c. milk
food coloring (any colors)
5 slices bread
Directions: Fill 4 glasses with a 1/4 cup of milk each. Then put 5 drops of food coloring into milk to make 4 different colors. Use a small paint brush and use the colored milk as paint on your bread. Place your bread into a toaster and wait till the bread is toasted. Lightly butter to give more taste.
English Muffin Pizza
Ingredients:
4 split english muffins
1/4 c. pizza sauce
1/4 c. shredded mozzarella or parmesean cheese
any toppings (such as mushrooms, pepperoni, green pepper, pineapple, bacon)
Directions: Toast your english muffins. Spread pizza sauce evenly on muffin halves. Sprinkle cheese on top and add your toppings. Put on tray and put in oven. Broil for about 5 minutes or until cheese is melted.
