Indoor Picnic
Pack a basket with paper plates, utensils and cups. Make sandwiches, pack fresh fruit, pretzels, a thermos of your favorite juice or kool-aid, and a yogurt or snack cake for dessert. Spread a blanket on the living room floor and serve a picnic lunch indoors! Add to the fun by dressing in summer clothes or beach attire. Be sure to wear your sunglasses and sunscreen!
Indoor Hopscotch
If you have a cement basement floor, use chalk to draw out a hopscotch board. When you are finished playing, the chalk will wash off with a mop and warm water.
Make Your Own Chalkboard
(Best done in the garage)
This project can be done on almost any surface, even the garage wall! Chalkboard paint can be purchased for about $10 (in either green or black). Once you have the paint and the surface, paint yourself a chalkboard (do in garage or somewhere with good ventilation). Once the board is finished and dry you will have a surface that you can use over and over again.
Indoor S'mores
Ingredients:
2/3 cup light corn syrup
2 tablespoons margarine or butter
1 pkg. (11-1/2 ozs) real milk chocolate morsels
1 tsp vanilla
1 pkg. (10 ozs) Golden Grahams Cereal
3 cups miniature marshmallows
Directions: Butter a 13 x 9 inch baking pan. Heat corn syrup, margarine and real milk chocolate, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla. Pour over cereal in large mixing bowl; toss quickly until completely coated with chocolate. Press mixture evenly in pan with the back of a buttered spoon. Let stand until firm - about 1 hour. Cut into about 1-1/2 inch squares. Enjoy!
Indoor Painting Projects
(see outdoor activities for more painting ideas)
Straw Painting: Add a few drops of thinned paint onto paper and give your child a straw to blow different patterns.
Mirror Image Painting: Fold a piece of paper in half and open it back up. Paint some images, shapes, or just drops of paint on one side of the fold. Fold the paper back over on top of the painted side and smooth it with your hand to make sure the paint contacts the blank side. Open up the paper to reveal a mirror image.
Sponge Stamping: Using cheap kitchen sponges that are flat and dried out, cut them into different shapes. Then let the kids use the sponges as their paint brushes to create sponge paintings. This project is also great for making wrapping paper.
Crayon Resist Painting: Use a white crayon to draw anything you want on a white piece of paper. Then paint over the crayon using thinned paint. You can use different color crayons on different colors of paper to make a different effect.
